A discussion about a temporary structure
The Burning Man Festival takes place in a temporary, five-day city in the desert in a space that facilitates communal life, creativity, art and radical self-expression. The final night of the festival pivots around the burning of a temple that has served as a spiritual venue created by the community for the community. A place in which people leave pictures of those who have passed away, notes containing secrets, small gifts, and that contains spaces in which people can be alone and experience a sense of spirituality. Whereas the burning of the man is traditionally celebratory in the festival, the burning of the temple is accompanied by a thunderous silence. During the performance we discussed the Burning Man Temple and its meaning for the community, and tried to construct and burn a small temple.
