The flautist from Yerevan
Musical legend Djivan Gasparyan came to us directly from the Mountains of Ararat in Armenia. 86-year-old Gasparyan – thanks to whom the duduk (a traditional flute played by shepherds) has been included in many renowned philharmonic orchestras – is an iconic musician who has put Caucasus music on the map and who many consider to be the most prominent voice of Armenia.
Gasparyan, who came to Israel with his duduk quartet which includes his grandson, is known for producing notes and melodies from his wind instrument that sound like a mixture of the flute and the oboe—an harmonious lament for a lost and ancient heritage that expresses without words the yearning of a shepherd who has lost his flock and is looking for his place among the peoples of the world.
The performance produced many memorable and moving moments both on stage and among the audience, which included revered members and representatives of the Armenian community.
