Tongues of Fire
This erupting volcano on the roof of a building is a monumental image that deliberately disrupts the city skyline, symbolizes a meeting place and danger, shines a new light on the Temple Mount, and spits in the face of the Holy City. Artist Tom Pnini placed a sculpture of one of the most symbolic spots in the city, a two-dimensional model of an erupting volcano.
What does it mean to live in the shadow of a volcano? The Jerusalem version of the work, which is inevitably charged with volatile political associations, becomes an entertaining performance for the masses. The audience is invited to watch the endless eruptions from the street or from the surrounding roofs, and to view this staged wonder which simulates a terrifying natural phenomenon from a safe distance.
